Audrey Mae Cargill Murray was a caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She left this world after a long two-year battle with kidney disease and cancer on February 15, 2022, at the age of 89.
Audrey was the only child born to Schuyler Wilson and Mary Agnes Cargill on July 16, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York (for years mom had us thinking her middle name was Maria). She was raised and educated in Brooklyn, after graduating from high school, she joined the Women’s Army Corps (United States Army) and was stationed at Camp Cooke in Santa Barbara, California. There she met and married her husband, the late Leon E. Murray, who was also in the Army. Although the marriage ended in divorce, from this union they had three daughters, Leondra, Valarie, and Cheryl.
After locating to Washington, DC, where they raised their daughters, Audrey started her civil service career working for the CIA. For over 40 years, she held various administrative, HR, and managerial positions in the Department of Defense.
Audrey loved helping people with their careers, assisting with their resumes, and the complicated hiring process of the government. After earning her degree, she held managerial positions where she was able to further assist those who wanted to advance their career in the government.
Fiercely independent and adventurous, Audrey loved to travel and cruise; she introduced her older grandchildren to cruising. She traveled to Spain, Korea, China, Cuba, and other places throughout the United States. Experiencing new things, places, and cultures, Audrey felt were just as important as a book education. Audrey loved her family and friends and liked having a good time. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining her family and friends, hosting her scrabble club parties and cookouts. All her children and grandchildren knew how to properly set a table. Many lessons were taught at Camp Audrey, when the grandchildren visited their grandma Audrey in Florida, they were taught to properly make a bed, set a table, and other life skills.
Audrey was a member of the Florida National Guard, a member of Toastmasters International, an active member in her church community in Jacksonville, Florida, where she sang in the choir and volunteered with the youth and various other ministries in the church. There she met and to this day has maintained a wonderful church community of friends in Jacksonville.
Audrey leaves behind her three daughters, Leondra (Percy “preceded in death”), Valarie (Clinton) and Cheryl (Anthony), grandchildren, Matthew, Raymond (Evelyn), Jennifer, Brian, James, Jr. (Crystal), Erika, Candace, Brandon and Malcolm; great-grandchildren, Marlin, Jay’len, Myles, Kimberlyn, Tyrone, Jameir, Micah, Trinity, Caleb, and Faith; a dear friend Corrie Thompson, the Murray family nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and many friends.
