Benjamin Michael “Mike” Scrivens was born in Washington DC on December 8, 1954 to Joe and Ruth Scrivens. After graduating from Rockville High School, Mike worked at various restaurants before joining the Board of Education as a school bus mechanic. Later on, Mike went to work for the Naval Surface Warfare Center. In 1985, Mike met the love of his life when both he and Susan volunteered with Special Olympics. They married in 1987. Mike and Susan soon welcomed their daughter, Molly and shortly thereafter, their son, Russell.
Even before having a growing family, Mike decided to go back to school. While working full time, Mike graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics and a Masters in Computer Science. Not yet satisfied he’d fulfilled his educational goals, Mike went on to complete his Project Management Certification.
In 1993, Mike joined the FBI in their Information Technology division and enjoyed a long career there in various positions of increasing responsibilities. His co-workers elected him the unofficial “mayor” of the FBI.
Ever since his Special Olympic days, Mike had a passion for volunteering. He was very involved in the Boy Scouts, even after his son Russell had left. He became a troop leader and helped many scouts achieve their Eagle badges. Mike was born and raised a Catholic and the church became a very important part of his life. He taught CCD for over 15 years at Holy Redeemer in Kensington, Md.
Despite contracting polio as a baby, Mike participated in numerous athletic activities including nine Marine Corps Marathons, downhill skiing, and completing the Seagull Century and Hunger for Life Century bike rides. He was also close to completing the retrofit of his Harley Davidson.
Mike is survived by his loving wife Susan, his children, Molly and Russell, his five siblings, Penny and her husband Michael, Patrick and his wife Maurine, Shelly and her husband Dave, Brian and his wife Barbara and Susan and her husband Sean. Mike is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, his in-laws Cindy Flanders and her husband Fred, Cathy Flanders and many loving friends.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 9705 Summit Avenue, Kensington, MD at 1:00 pm, Saturday July 13, 2019.
A reception will follow immediately at the home of Liz and Tim Brennan: 4324 Dresdan St, Kensington, MD 20895.
