Bernadine Marie Huston

Bernadine Marie Huston, age 68 of Bowie, Maryland, left this earth on Thursday, September 13, 2018. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob, her father MSGT Mac J Henderson, her mother Phyllis Henderson, her older sister Mary Kay, and infant daughter Jessica Anne. She is survived by her son, Samuel D Huston and his wife Melissa, her sister Maxine Garrity and her husband Michael, and several nieces and cousins. She is also survived by her dear friend Beth Clark, whom she thought of as a daughter, her husband Mike and their children whom Bernie considered her honorary grandchildren. 

Bernadine was born on April 23, 1950, and because her dad was Air Force, she and her sisters got to live all over the world before he was finally stationed at Andrews Airforce base.  In was in PG county, she met and married the love of her life, Robert Dallas Huston, on April 25, 1970.  Everyone knows her son Sam, but her heart was shared by two delicate lives, Stephen and Jessie, who passed in infancy. Bernie always wanted a large family, so she held close to her heart her friends’ and their families.  She is Momma H to so many people who loved her.

In the 70’s and 80’s, Bernie volunteered much of her time to the South Bowie Boys and Girls Club.  She was well known for her family’s connection to soccer, and she cherished driving by Huston field, which was named for her late husband.  She worked for Greeno Enterprises for 10 yrs., and then the Bowie PetSmart for 20 years. At PetSmart, Bernie made cakes for everyone’s birthday.  She kept detailed notes on her coworkers’ favorite flavors. Bernie loved animals, but she had a fondness for black cats and had several over the years. However, at work, she was very proud to show off her “grandpuppies” Copper and Loki.

Bernie was an avid tea drinker and loved a good tea party.  She played cards with her friends, and her hobbies included knitting, cross-stitch, puzzles, coloring books and she was an avid reader. Bernie was a big fan of Game of Thrones, regrettably, she won’t know how the series ends (thanks George RR Martin).  Her best-known collection was her snowmen, which some might call an addiction.  She had hundreds of snowman decorations, but when she counted each individual one, she said there were thousands.

A celebration of her life will be on Saturday September 22, 2018 at Beall Funeral Home at 6512 NW Crain Hwy (Rt. 3 South), Bowie, MD.  Visitation will be from 2pm to 4pm; a reception will follow at her house in Bowie. In lieu of flowers, the she would have appreciated a donation to Children's National Hospital, 111 Michigan Avenue NW, Washington, D.C., 20010
