Dr. Bosco Rebello, aged 73, passed away peacefully at Doctor's Community Hospital in Lanham, Maryland on August 25, 2021. Dr. Rebello was born September 2, 1947 to Anthony Xavier and Mary Purification Rebello.
One of five children, Bosco had a generally serious demeanor with wisps of playfulness shining through. Taking after his mother, Bosco was naturally determined to learn the piano from an early age; he voraciously practiced and learned piano show tunes with his private tutor that remained with him for life. As a child, Bosco was especially studious and stood first in his class in several subjects, from math to elementary science. His school years at St. Mary's High School and St. Xavier's College in Mumbai, both Jesuit-run institutions, also saw a continued increase in Bosco's faith and spiritual life.
Bosco was the first in his family to pursue medicine when he attended Goa Medical College. He relished his time in Panjim and feasted on the local Goan cuisine, his favorite. He steadfastly attended 5 AM daily mass at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, and loved walking up its iconic white steps to the chapel. From medical school, Bosco became a surgeon and completed his residency at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Sion, Mumbai. During this residency, Bosco began regularly offering his medical advice and services to the children of a local orphanage, Our Lady's Home, in his free time and at no cost. It was through this volunteer work that Bosco met who would become his lifelong friend, Father Rui Comelo.
In 1980, Bosco met his wife Audrey, who was a longtime classmate of Bosco's sister Rossanna. The two wed on December 20, 1983 and moved to America. Settling in Maryland, Bosco pursued his vigorous and demanding 36-year surgical career at many hospitals including Columbia Hospital for Women in DC, Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge VA, and Doctor's Community Hospital in Lanham MD.
Bosco had three children whom he loved dearly: Clinton, Dionne, and Elliott. He held high expectations for them, but encouraged them all the same. He put all of his children through violin training in the DC Youth Orchestra Program from the age of 4 until college, and each child he gave private piano lessons with a local expert pianist. He took careful consideration of his children's academic education as well, personally sitting down with each of them and answering their science and math questions throughout their schooling. Bosco deeply hoped that his kids would follow his footsteps into medicine. It was his self-proclaimed "greatest blessing and joy" to actually see all three of his children become doctors like him. Most importantly, Bosco instilled in his children a devout faith in God and implored them to seek guidance from the Lord in times of need, as he did across his life.
