Brenda Jacobs Roup, LTC (RET), US Army Nurse Corps, PhD

Died on August 11, 2023 at Collington Assisted Living of cancer.

Dr. Roup was born in Petersburg, VA on July 8, 1948. She graduated from Colonial Heights, VA High School in 1966, from the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing, Virginia Commonwealth University in 1970 with a BSN degree, and from the Catholic University of America in 1977 with an MSN degree. At MCV, she was in the Army Student Nurse Program and started her career in the US Army shortly after graduation. She served in Army hospitals worldwide until her retirement in 1992. She specialized in the prevention of infections and infectious diseases in healthcare, culminating in the role of Nurse Consultant in Infection Prevention and Control to the US Army Surgeon General and Chief of Infection Control Service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

After retirement, she obtained her PhD in Nursing and Infectious Disease Epidemiology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She then served for 18 years at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as the Nurse Consultant in Infection Prevention and Control.

She is survived by her niece: Sarah McGhee, sister-in-law: Patty McGhee, stepson: Charles Roup, stepbrother: Carl Dalton, some wonderful cousins, and an aunt and some dear, dear friends. She is predeceased by her husband of 32 years: Clarence James Roup, her brother: Carl Allen McGhee, her mother: Sarah Jacobs McGhee, her father: Eugene Thurman Jacobs, and her stepmother: Virginia Dalton Jacobs.

Visitation will be at Beall Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 from 1pm to 3pm. At the request of the deceased, no funeral service will be held. A graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date, where she will be buried with her beloved husband, CJ.
