Byron G. Cox of Bowie, Maryland, passed away after a brief illness, on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at the age of 74. Byron transitioned peacefully with his beloved wife Sharron by his side.
Byron G. Cox, affectionately known as “Jimmy” was born February 8, 1947 to George and Ivy Cox in Islington, St. Mary, Jamaica. Byron attended Water Valley Elementary School, West Indies College, and the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Management Studies. While in Jamaica, he taught at Woodford and Robins Bay Elementary Schools, served as a Scout Master, and served in The Reserve Jamaica Defence Force. Byron worked as an accountant for several years with Goodyear Tire Factory in Morant Bay, St. Thomas Jamaica, and was an ardent member of the Morant Bay Lions Club. Byron moved to the United States in the 1980’s. He was married to the love of his life Sharron and retired from a career as a Paralegal.
Byron was a husband, stepfather; grandfather, brother, uncle, and great-uncle who wore many hats. A talented poet, freelance Writer, and blogger, Byron wrote poetry for many years. He used poetry as a vehicle to pay tributes to friends and family on special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. Byron’s first publication, “Come, Walk With Me” is a collection of poems and short stories that explores all aspects of life, from the struggles to the most joyous of moments that will leave an impression in your mind. Not only was Byron a great poet, his passionate recitation of poetry was powerful, captivated audiences, and resulted in a number of requests for performances at birthday and anniversary celebrations, and local events. A man with many talents, Byron was also a great public speaker who inspired his audience with passion
and humor.
Byron was a true lover of life and enjoyed it to the fullest. He loved languages. He taught himself Spanish and never missed an opportunity to practice speaking, even doing language emersion overseas. His favorite saying was “Life is wonderful! La vida es maravillosa!” A passionate traveler with his wife always by his side, they travelled to Peru, Costa Rica, Panama, and many places in the United States. If you knew Byron, you knew he loved music - playing the piano, attending jazz festivals, concerts, and school orchestra concerts for his niece Meko and great nephews Adrian and Julien. You could count on him, always with Sharron at his side, to show up. His favorite place to be was Friday Night Jazz and Monday Night Blues at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC. Maybe he took you there too! We will all remember Byron most for the love he had for his family. He never missed an opportunity to support or celebrate with his family. He loved to dance and one of his favorite dances was the Father-Daughter dance with his granddaughter Saliyah. A cheerleader, he was there for his granddaughter Kyara’s basketball games. As a “big” brother, he never missed his sister Dr. Judy’s college graduations or military functions. Byron enjoyed baking and container gardening, always sharing his banana bread. Byron loved flowers so he always had flowers on his desk, shared flowers, or shared pictures of beautiful flowers to make everyone happy. As if he still needed more hats, Byron was also a passionate photographer with an eye for composition. He shared many travel photographs that exhibited his creative mind.
Byron is survived by his wife Sharron; step daughters Kyra, Tonya, Norva, and Dotha; stepson Dawit; granddaughters, Kyara, Samiya, and Saliyah; grandson Davray; great grandson, Karter; sister Dr. Judy Cox-Brown and husband Barrington; brother Morris and wife Paulett; nieces Kalisia, Cathrina, Meko, Morissa, and Kai; nephews Errol, Scion and Kahleel; great nephews Adrian, Julien, Matthew, Micah, Malikai; great niece Zihara; and extended family to include Dr. Sandra Hayes and Margaret Gaskill, and many great friends.
