Carl Thomas Richards

Carl Richards, 83, of Crofton, MD passed away on February 7, 2024. Carl was born to Irvin and Julia (Rich) Richards on September 12, 1940, in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Newport Township High School in 1958. After he attended and received a Music Education degree from West Chester State College (now West Chester University) in 1962. He later received a PhD in Political Science from the University of Maryland in 1972. Carl married Joan (Warner) Dempsey in 1964 and 33 years later married Bonnie (Sporre) Richards in 1997.

Carl’s professional life was mostly spent in education and consulting. Early on Carl taught music, worked for the State of Maryland in the Governor’s office and CSBS (Conference of State Bank Supervisors). Later Carl was the Director of Webster University at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., and served as President of LECE International. After retiring, Carl continued to be a mentor to former colleagues, played golf, and went to the gym regularly.

Carl is best remembered for his LOVE of skiing. He had a constant smile on his face. He enjoyed music, wine tasting, golf, working out, swimming in the ocean, and talking about finance with his sons and grandson Matthew. Carl volunteered at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, MD where he attended performances often. He wore his dancing shoes to every wedding! Carl enjoyed hosting crab feasts for family in Ocean City, MD and making waffles for his grandkids. Carl was an avid fan watching his kids and grandkids on stage, on deck, on the slopes, in the gym, on the track, or from the sideline.

Carl is survived by his wife Bonnie; son Jeff (Vicky), son Jason (Kristen), Eric Sporre (Michelle), Andrea Sporre (Chris Landers); his sister Eileen Moyer; his grandchildren Christian, Ellie, Matthew, Tyler, Riley, Kavela, Satori, and Emily; and many loving nieces, nephew, friends, colleagues, neighbors. He is predeceased by his father, Irvin; mother, Julia; brother Baby Irvin; and sister; Alicia.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday February 24, 2024, from 2PM to 4PM at Crofton Country Club (1691 Crofton Parkway, Crofton, MD 21114).
