Carl Henry Vettel of Bowie, Maryland passed away peacefully on November 21, 2018 at the age of 58 years. He was born on November 15, 1960 in Washington D.C., before moving to Bowie in 1993 after he married. He attended both Benjamin Franklin University and North Dakota University, where he graduated with a degree in business in 1982. He practiced as an accountant for several companies until retiring.
He was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 2577, in Bowie Maryland. He was also a very active member of the Bowie Lions Club, District 22-C, serving as District Governor in 2017.
His hobbies were gardening, woodworking, and always looking for ways to make his home more beautiful and comfortable. He greatly loved his family, his friends and neighbors, the city of Bowie, performing community service, and was a proud American. He enjoyed the Washington Nationals, the Washington Redskins, rock and roll music, and folk music.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Janice Armbrust Vettel, a retired nurse, as well as his sister Carrie Vettel Flanagan, her husband Brian Flanagan, their children Theresa, Jennifer, and Sean. He was of the Catholic faith and was proud to be godfather to his niece Theresa, age 29, and to Sadie Ann Larned, age 15 months, and proud to be a member of St. Pius X Church in Bowie, Maryland.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Ruth Vettel, his grandparents, and a number of aunts and uncles. He was very proud of his father’s North Dakota heritage and the very large family of aunts, uncles, and cousins who still reside there.
Services will be held Friday, November 30, 2018 at 11am at St. Pius X Church at 14720 Annapolis Road, Bowie, Maryland. A chance for paying respect prior to the Mass will begin at 9:45 AM. A repast meal will be held directly after Mass at the Bowie Lions Club at 13108 11th St, Bowie, Maryland 20715. Inurnment will held privately at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bowie Lions Club at the address above.
The family expresses their extreme gratitude to all the physicians and nurses at Johns Hopkins Hospital who cared for Carl during his lengthy illness.
