Carol Ann Baynton Phelps Warfield, affectionately known as “Carol Phelps”, died peacefully in her sleep on July 7, 2024 after a courageous battle with PSP. She grew up in Bethesda, MD and graduated from Walter Johnson High School. During her early years she and her mother were frequent visitors to the White House, as her father was an Assistant Attorney General under President Harry Truman. Prior to moving to Bethesda she lived in Washington, DC where her childhood friends and neighbors included the Richard Nixon children.
Carol showed artistic talent at an early age and began her love of the Collie breed at the same time. When she was five years old she molded a piece of clay into a collie figurine, and showed it to her mother. It was so detailed that her mother asked her “where did you get that?”
For over 60 years she displayed this talent through oil paintings, drawings, sculptures, bronzes, and jewelry, eventually becoming Nationally known. Her capturing of the collie expression was described as “unmatched” and her art pieces were instantly recognizable. She also bred and showed many collies over the years to their AKC Championships.
In the early 1960’s she married Robert Phelps of Mt. Victoria, MD and had one son with him, Robert Phelps, Jr. In the 1970’s she travelled throughout the mid-west attending art shows and painting, where she began to build a name for herself. Because of her immense talent she was asked to produce renditions of other AKC breeds in drawing and sculpted form.
Carol’s secondary love was Arabian and Thoroughbred horses. She displayed this love through oil paintings and bronzes. For years Carol was a fixture at horse shows and dog shows, showing and selling her artwork and catching up with old friends.
In the early 2000’s she remarried to Dr. Charles Warfield and moved to Annapolis. There she opened an art studio and sold her work. In her retirement years she continued to paint and attend local dog shows with friends.
She will be missed by many throughout the country, especially in the collie world.
She was preceded in death by her parents Gladys (Dee) Baynton and Harold (Hal) I Baynton, and by her husband Dr. Charles Warfield. She is survived by her son Robert Phelps, Jr. of Mt. Victoria, MD.
She will be interred on Friday, 19 July 2024 at 2 pm in Rock Creek Cemetery, NW Washington, D.C.
