Curlene Winefred McLean, affectionately known to her family and friends as Ms. Jas, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 80. She was born on May 24, 1943, in Rennalls District, Point Hill, St. Catherine, Jamaica, to Elisha Douglas and Bernice Thomas-Douglas.
She attended Excelsior High School and resided in Kingston, Jamaica where she met Audley Mclean. They married in 1970 and shared 50 years of unwavering commitment and love until his passing in 2020. Together, they embarked on a journey that led them from Jamaica to Maryland in 1977, seeking new opportunities.
Upon her initial migration to the US, Curlene worked as a housekeeper, demonstrating her strong work ethic and dedication to providing for her family. Her ambition drove her to pursue further education, earning an administrative certification. She later acquired a role as an Accounting clerk in the transition billing and accounting department at Holy Cross Hospital, where she faithfully served from 1983 to 2001.
Additionally, Curlene dedicated her weekends to working nights for Mr. Abe Polin at one of his residential buildings in Chevy Chase, MD.
In 2002, Curlene relocated to Pembroke Pines, Florida, where she continued to embrace life with grace, resilience, and a warm smile. In 2014, she retired and fulfilled her dream of returning to Jamaica, settling in Trelawny, where she found joy in soaking up the warm sun, tending to her garden, and mastering the art of fixing and priming anything in close proximity.
Curlene was predeceased by her beloved firstborn son, Jason George Wright, who passed away on August 15, 1980, her sister, Sereline Douglas, and her husband, Audley McLean.
Curlene is survived by her two beloved sons, Adrian Wright and Marlon McLean, her granddaughter, Yanique Wright, and Grandsons, Christopher Wright and Rory Jason Lambert-Wright. Stepchildren, Andrea, Nadine and Kirk Mclean. Dear siblings, Gloria Douglas-Bailey (Baby G), Evadney Douglas (Beck), and Patrick Douglas. Her nieces, Carol, Sandra, Tammy and Claudette. Her cousins, Joan McFarlane, Velma Parker, Eulah Parker, Linda Eccleston, Ayesha, Safiyah, Rashad Murray, grandnieces, Marsha, Marquita, Suelynn, and countless other beloved extended family and friends.
Curlene will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her strong work ethic, and her generous spirit. She will be fondly remembered for her infectious laughter, charm and wit wrapped in a no-nonsense package and a sprinkle of “Bless your Heart”. Her happiest moments were spent dancing to rockers reggae, surrounded by her beloved family, traveling, cooking, and creating cherished memories. She leaves behind a legacy of class and resilience. Her memory will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her and she will live on in the hearts forever.
