David Len Balter, 83, of Bowie, Md., died May 29, 2022, at Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham, Md. He was born in Rochester, Pa., and grew up in Freedom, Pa., the son of Sidney R. and Rae Abrams Balter. He earned a B.S. in elementary education in 1962 from Indiana State Teachers College, Indiana, Pa., and a master’s in educational communications from the University of Pittsburgh in 1971.
David worked as a teacher, grades 4, 5 and 6, in Hopewell Township, Pa.; as a TV teacher in American Samoa; as a National Aeronautics and Space Administration space science education specialist; and as an elementary and middle school teacher in several Maryland schools in the Washington, D.C., area. He retired from teaching in 1989 after 10 years in Prince George’s County schools.
In retirement, he built street rods, which he drove frequently to car shows, enjoyed golf and picked out tunes on his guitars. David also collected toys, especially antique metal cars and trucks.
He is survived by Kathy Lindeman, his loving partner of more than 36 years; a daughter, Jodie Balter; a son, Sidney Balter (Heidi); and two grandchildren, Max Balter and Sydney Balter.
