Donald Lee Moore

December 14, 1929 — May 25, 2022

Donald Lee Moore, of Bowie, Maryland passed away on Wednesday, May 25,2022, at the age of 92. After several months of declining health, Don as he was affectionally known died in his sleep with his family by his side.

Don was born in Naperville, Illinois on December 14, 1929, to father Orlo Harry Moore and Mother Elva Gertrude Street. The youngest of three, Don spent his childhood years alongside his doting and energetic siblings, Edwin and Margaret.  He was raised by a single mom for most of his life and therefore learned very practical life skills which served him well in later years as he learned to be self-sufficient and grew an interest in building and architecture which shaped his future working with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for most of his working career.   He was a graduate of Kansas State and a longtime sports fan of not just K-State but all the area sports teams such as the Redskins, Bullets, Ravens, and when they weren’t beating K-State, Navy.

In his late twenties, he and Rosemary who preceded him in death would venture from the plains of Kansas moving east to Bowie.  On most weekends he could be found at the Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis, Maryland often with family members as his crew especially his first wife Rosemary always by his side sailing in regattas in an old wooden Thistle.  And just like the flower, it’s a little rough around the edges and wasn’t the easiest boat to rig or sail.   It would only be decades later that he finally modernized to a fiberglass hull much to his family’s delight.   He competed in Thistle Nationals for many years and when his competitive days were over he gave his time assisting the racing association.   His other passion when not re-roofing his home by himself or building an addition onto his home, again by himself, was fishing and if he did take a vacation it was often to the beach to enjoy some salt water fishing and in his later years, gardening growing flowers and vegetables in the backyard.

He is survived by his second wife Carrie Elizabeth Doffermyre of Lanham, Maryland; daughters Cheryl Weikle of Bowie, MD, Julie Lindstrom (Mark) of Marietta, GA and son Brian Moore (Monica) of Crofton, MD; grandchildren, Steven and Kevin Weikle of Bowie, MD, Nicole Brock (Todd) of Brookhaven, GA and Peter Lindstrom (Megan) of San Diego, CA, and, Shaun Moore of Crofton, MD along with two great-grandchildren, Owen and Olivia Brock.
