Doris Ann Johnson (February 12, 1923 – June 27, 2019)

Doris Ann Johnson, aged 96, of Seabrook, MD, died peacefully with her son’s by her side on Thursday, June 27, 2019 due to congestive heart failure.

Doris was born on February 12, 1923 in Alexandra, VA she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Roy Hartwig Johnson (2010). She was also preceded in death by her parents Oscar L. and Dolly Lee (Shelton) Green, her sister, Laura Lee Rowell (2004), brother, James Oscar Green (1943), and her son, Stanley F Moyer (2018).  She is survived by her sons, James Roy Johnson (Barbara) of Cary NC and John Russell Johnson of Dunkirk, MD.  She was a loving grandmother to Benjamin Hartwig Johnson, Barbara Anne Mendler, and Thomas W. Green, III and was a great grandmother to four.

Doris lived a long and fulfilling life.  During and following WWII, she worked for the Navy Department in Washington, DC working in the printing and drafting divisions.  In 1951 she married Roy Hartwig Johnson and after living in Franconia, VA moved to Seabrook, MD where she lived until her death.  She had a long and rewarding career with the Prince George County Public School system managing school cafeterias. Not one to sit still after retirement she soon returned to work as substitute nurse’s aide.  

Christmas was her favorite holiday where she decorated her home with great joy.  She is remembered fondly by family, friends and favorite doctors for her delicious Christmas cookies.  She is also remembered with great fondness by her church family for her work with the Lenten luncheons.

Doris loved to travel with her church group from Christ Episcopal Church (Rockville, MD), where she was a long time member.  She spent many years visiting and traveling to Europe and in the United States.  She loved history and had an incredible memory for historical events, as well as the names and important dates of her friends and relatives.  She was a compassionate and loving friend to many. 

Doris was a very independent person and despite increasing difficulties due to macular degeneration continued to live a rewarding life.

Family will receive friends at BEALL FUNERAL HOME, 6512 NW Crain Highway (Rt. 3 South), Bowie, MD, on Tuesday July 16 from 2pm to 4pm and from 6pm to 8pm. The funeral service will be held at BEALL FUNERAL HOME on July 17, 2019 at 12:30pm. Interment will be at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD at 2:30pm.
