Doris G. Whiting died on December 11, 2024 at her granddaughter’s home in Eldersburg, MD. She was born on October 31, 1926 to Otis and Neva Yowell in Haywood, Va., and grew up in that area. She worked for the U.S. State Department during World War II and for Doubleday Hill, Corning and Western Pest Control in Washington D.C. and Maryland, while raising her family. She married John R. (“Jack”) Whiting on September 12, 1944, just before he was deployed to the South Pacific with the Army Air Corps. After he was discharged from the service they lived in New York, Maryland and Texas before retiring to Madison County, Va., where they ran the Wolftown Mercantile Country Store for a number of years. After Jack’s death in 1998, Doris lived in Glen Burnie and Millersville, MD. She was predeceased by her husband; her brother Hunter Yowell and sister Minnie Phillips; her daughter Linda Cohen and son Jeffrey Whiting and her grandsons Steven and Daryl Cohen. She is survived by her daughter Connie and son-in-law John Richards II; her son John and daughter-in-law Nonie Whiting; her daughter-in-love Marie Unger, her grandchildren John Richards III (Vivian), Susan Ryan (Rob), Karen McLaren (Tim), Megan Whiting, and Erin Miller; and her great-grandchildren Nathan Cohen, Jordyn Walston, Allison Ryan, Liam McLaren, and Tristan Miller. She leaves many other relatives and numerous friends who will miss her wit, her caring and sunny disposition and her beautiful smile. A memorial service is being planned for Thursday, Dec. 19 at the Glen Burnie United Methodist Church at 11AM; private burial will take place at the Crownsville Veterans Cemetery early next year.
