Dorothy H. Wieber of Crofton Maryland, formerly of Bowie, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday in her home surrounded by loved ones.
She was happily married to Thomas Joseph Wieber for 65 years and 11 months. A loving mother of Lisa Curro (Chris) of Silver Spring, MD, T.J. Wieber (Josie) of Millersville, MD, and Susan Wieber of Hollywood, MD. A kindhearted grandmother of Ryan Curro (Selen), Alex Curro, Angela Wieber (Bailey), Sehee Curro, and Jessica Wieber. Dorothy is survived by her sister Linda Adler of Duxbury, MA. She is preceded in death by her siblings: Jean Brown, John (Jack) Hughes, and Edward (Ned) Hughes, and her parents John and Dorothy (Nyhan) Hughes.
Dorothy lived a life marked by faith and family. She was a volunteer and a member of the Sacred Heart Ladies Auxiliary for many years. Dottie attended Sunday Mass and often daily Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Chapel. She has written and said on several occasions “The Catholic faith has always been the most important part of my life.”
Dottie was a graduate of Brookline H.S. and Emmanuel College, where she was known for her tap dancing performances. In her college senior yearbook the editor noted, “Twinkling taps to ’Tea for Two,’ Busy booster of the Spanish club, Italian and Portuguese also included in her language studies. If she fulfills her plans to work in Washington, a certain special redhead will be very much missed in Boston.”
Dorothy worked for the National Security Agency as an analyst and Vietnamese linguist from 1955 until 1963. While working for the federal government, she was introduced to her husband by another Emmanuel College graduate, who happened to be Tom's colleague. Although she thought he looked to be too young, they quickly fell for each other and a year and a half later they were happily married. She left the workforce to become a full-time mom and raise their three adopted children. In 1979 Dorothy returned to work as a supervisor for a marketing research firm. She become the office manager and assistant for a chiropractor in the early 1980's and worked there on and off for another 30 years.
Taught to tap dance at age four by her Aunt Marjorie, Dottie never lost her love for dance. Even in her 90’s, without any stretching or practice, Dot would often happily and confidently tap at a party or event. Someone would “cue the music” and Dorothy would put on a great show. Perhaps she is tap dancing in heaven right now.
She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, dominoes, bingo, and cheering for the Boston Red Sox. But most of all she enjoyed time with family and friends. Dottie especially loved being with her grandchildren. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and often expressed her love for others through her excellent cooking. Dorothy made many delicious meals and desserts that included spaghetti corn, Rick‘s chili, Maids of Honor cupcakes, and her famous blonde brownies.
The Crofton Brightview Independent Living community and staff have been extremely supportive of Dorothy as her health declined. Tom and Dot have made so many wonderful friends there. Tom often says that they could not have chosen a better community to live in. The Wieber Family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice Of The Chesapeake for the care and compassion provided to Dottie over the past year as they eased her suffering from Alzheimer’s. Dorothy is dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
