Edwin Barrington Brooks was born to Ivy Monroe Poles and Walter McKinley Brooks on July 3, 1939, in Washington D.C. He passed away at his home in Upper Marlboro on December 10, 2024, at the age of 85.
Edwin graduated from Spingarn High School in Washington D.C. He briefly attended the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (formerly Maryland State College) before being drafted to the U.S. Army. He enlisted in 1963 and was stationed at Fort Benning in Georgia during the Vietnam War era.
Edwin served active duty until 1965. He was honorably discharged and joined the reserves. While a reservist, he became an employee of the federal government. Edwin worked for the Department of Commerce in the Patent Office where he ran late routinely. He would often run into Anna Louise Ross from York County South Carolina. She also worked for Commerce in the Economic Development Administration and routinely ran late. The pair started dating and married in July of 1967. They had their first child, Charmayne, in June of 1969. He left the Army reserves in August of the same year. The small family moved from Washington D.C. to Upper Marlboro, MD in 1973. Edwin and Anna eventually welcomed two more children, Andrea and Kia.
Edwin was known around Marlboro Meadows as an avid runner. He was a fan of the Washington area sports teams (Washington Redskins and Wizards). If he was not attending a game in person, he was in front of the television enjoying a game with a cold beer.
He was a career government employee until he retired from Health and Human Services (HHS). After retirement, Edwin spent some time traveling before he returned to work as a substitute teacher for PG county school system.
Edwin was a doting grandfather to Kashay and Avery. He would often act as a chauffeur for Kashay when she needed to be picked up from school or had an after-school activity. He would attend concerts and recitals for Avery. If one of his granddaughters needed him, he was going to show up.
Edwin leaves behind his wife Anna; his daughters Charmayne, Andrea, and Kia; grandchildren, Kashay and Avery; sisters, Shirley and Marcellene; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
