Estelle A. Thomas

May 21, 1953 — September 25, 2020

Estelle Agnes Thomas was born on May 21, 1953 in Washington, D.C. where she resided with her favorite cousin, Charles Albert Thomas for the last ten years of her life.  She was the fourth child from the union of John Arthur Thomas and Gladys Gertrude Proctor Thomas. Estelle departed this life peacefully on September 25, 2020.  Formerly married to Clarence Gatewood of Washington, D.C., she is survived by a son, Antoine L. Gatewood and two daughters              Sheree Y. Gatewood and Crystal R. Thomas; brothers John A. Thomas, Jr. and William O.E. Thomas; and sisters Betty I.E. Thomas and Mary Thomas Newsom (Patsy); sister-in-law Annie Jewel Thomas (John); grandchildren Shameia Gatewood, Nijah Coles, Eric Thomas Gatewood, and Landon Long; great granddaughter, Kumari Johnson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and her favorite pet (Oscar).

She was a pretty, vivacious and fun-loving person. She could make anyone laugh and did so often. She often enjoyed receiving jokes as well as sharing jokes. No one enjoyed having a good time as much as Estelle. She was well-loved in her neighborhood and everyone called her “Ma” because of her nurturing spirit and giving nature. She loved cooking for friends and family and was known for her famous potato salad. She loved animals and would frequently sit outside and feed the squirrels and birds. Her grandchildren loved spending time with her, and she loved each and every one of them. She would always have toys, games, clothes, and piggybanks ready for them.

Estelle was loved by many family and friends; she will be missed dearly. Estelle’s family has requested contributions of house plants in lieu of flowers or a donation to one of the following charitable organizations in her name:
