Esther Borges Alford

On October 29, 2018, Esther Borges Alford ended her battle with Lewy-Body Dementia after several long years. She was born on September 29, 1949 in Puerto Rico to parents Margarita Rodriguez-Borges and Marcial Borges-Ocasio.

Esther moved to New York at 2 years old and spent her formative years in Brooklyn. She has two sisters Isabel Gomez and Eda Trinidad and three brothers Marcial Borges, Raphael Borges (deceased) and Billy Borges (deceased).  Esther attended the State University of New York at Albany and graduated from there. After she graduated she moved back to Brooklyn and not to long after she married Harry W. Alford, Sr. The two were married in a private ceremony on March 22, 1975, ten years later they remarried in the Catholic church on March 23, 1985.  She went on to also receive two Master’s degrees one in Special Education and the other in Educational Technology.

She is survived by her husband Harry Alford Sr., her two loving children Kia Alford Rorie and her husband Kevin, and Harry Alford, Jr. and his wife Victoria. Her six grandchildren, Zachary, Stori, Caleb, Chloe, August and Cassel. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren and loving friends.

She worked for 35 plus years touching thousands of lives through the New York City Board of Education. She was an administrator, teacher, volunteer, and friend.  During her tenure it was part of her mission to ensure that not only were the children educated but that she uplift her colleagues as well. She supported and sometimes convinced many people to further their own education in order help their own careers as well. Esther was also an advocate in her community assisting people in gaining their citizenship and establishing businesses. Esther’s spirit, heart, devotion to God, family and friends was unique and inspirational.  She leaves behind far more people touched by her love than can be captured.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 from 4pm to 5pm at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Hwy (Rt 3 South), Bowie, MD, where a service will take place at 5pm.

There will be a repast at Covington Community Center, 3750 Elder Oaks Blvd., Bowie, MD from 6 pm to 10 pm
