Eugene George Leclerc passed away on October 24, 2018 in the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, Maryland. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of thirty years, Brenda Eldridge Leclerc and his loving grandson, Andrew, who both shared his deep love of sports and life. He is also survived by his daughters Janeen and Danielle; his sisters Michelle, Denise, and Lauren; his brothers Brian, Neal, Andrew, and Joseph; as well as their spouses, and numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Suzanne.
Gene was born in The Bronx, New York on May 6, 1946 to Eugene George Leclerc and Eugenia Persico Leclerc. He was raised in The Bronx and attended Catholic schools there. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, as did his father and grandfather, and served with distinction in Vietnam. Gene was wounded in combat and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service and Bravery.
He became a Journeyman Insulator, moving up to Business Agent for the Asbestos Workers Local 91. Gene founded and organized an Asbestos Removal Union to unionize and provide safety and health standards for workers coming in contact with the lethal substance. He also worked in the private sector at The Peter Angelos Law Firm fighting for the compensation and support of workers and their families devastated by the cancerous disease of Mesothelioma. He also worked fifteen years at the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers as Jurisdictional Director until he retired.
Gene was a devout Catholic and demonstrated his abundant faith by training and serving his Church as a Communicant of the Holy Communion. Gene will be missed by his many lifelong friends and the fellow tradesmen whom he served with unwavering dignity, respect and dedication.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, November 1, 2018 from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Hwy. (Rt 3 South), Bowie, MD. A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Chapel, 16501 Annapolis Rd., Bowie, MD on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 11am.
