Frederick Richard Wentland, of Odenton, Maryland, passed away on December 18, 2024, after a brief illness. Born on December 26, 1938, in Rossford, Ohio he was the son of the late Fred and Jane (Richards) Wentland.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Milagros Wentland; his children, Kathy Lyng of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Dan Wentland of Westminster, Maryland; six grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Roberta (Bobbie) Wentland. Fred leaves behind his brother Mike (Tina) Wentland of Maumee, Ohio and was predeceased by his brother Dan (Rhodena) Wentland.

Fred joined the United States Air Force at the age of 18 and earned a degree in electrical engineering from Oklahoma State University while serving. He received a commission as an officer and played a significant role as a flight controller during Apollo 11’s historic lunar landing in 1969. He retired from the United States Air Force after 23 years of dedicated service.

Following his military career, Fred joined the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), where he worked closely with the White House to develop and implement spectrum policy initiatives under President George W. Bush. His leadership in relocating spectrum to the private sector generated $15 billion for the U.S. Treasury. Fred retired from civil service after 27 years as Associate Administrator for Spectrum Management and worked 12 additional years as a consultant for Freedom Technologies Incorporated.

Fred was deeply devoted to his family, his work, and his faith. He was an active member of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Annapolis, Maryland at the time of his death.

A memorial service will be held on December 29, 2024 , visiting will begin at 11:30 AM followed by a service at 12 PM at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church (1120 Spa Road, Annapolis, MD 21403). Reception to follow. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Contributions in Fred’s memory may be made to St. Martin’s Lutheran Church.

Arrangements are by Beall Funeral Home in Bowie, Maryland.

Fred’s legacy of service and dedication will be cherished by all who knew him.
