Gemma Calliste

Gemma Calliste (née Bailey) was born on April 23, 1956, in Trinidad

and Tobago to Jean Johnson and Lloyd Bailey. As the eldest of five

children, Gemma embraced the role of caregiver and role model for her

younger siblings early in life. Her journey eventually took her to

Nottingham, England, where she pursued a distinguished career in

midwifery. It was there she met Len Holgate, and together they

welcomed a beautiful daughter, Elise Juness Holgate. From the very

beginning, Elise was the light of Gemma’s life. The bond they shared

was extraordinary, evident to everyone who knew them.

In the early 2000s, Gemma and Elise relocated to Bowie, Maryland,

where they spent their remaining years building a vibrant community of

friends and family. Gemma touched the lives of many, near and far, and

will always be remembered for her soft-spoken nature and her hearty

laugh.

On January 19, 2025, Gemma peacefully went to be with the Lord. She

was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Jean Johnson, and her

cherished daughter, Elise Juness Holgate.

Gemma leaves behind her siblings: Juel (Ronald) Bailey, Janice Bailey,

Runda Bailey, and Francis Bailey; a host of nieces and nephews; and

one special grandchild, Alexander Jacob Appleman.

Though her absence leaves an immeasurable void, we take solace in

knowing her joy is complete as she is reunited with her precious

Elise. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
