George H. Fisher, (90) of Gambrills, MD, passed away on December 5, 2021. He was born on February 24, 1931, in Shamokin, PA of parents, Arthur and Katherine Fisher.
George is survived by three children, Kenneth Fisher, Pamela Rich and David Fisher; five grandchildren, Angela Miller, Julia Coleman, David Rich, Adrian Fisher and Alec Fisher; and two great grandchildren, Rose Miller and Owen Fisher. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth (Betty), who predeceased him on October 20, 2016.
George grew up in the coal mining region of Kulpmont, PA. He was raised by his grandparents and grew up with uncles and aunts still living at home. George thought of his grandparents as his parents, but also often said that his Aunt Ruth was like a mother to him. George took many business courses in high school since he knew he could never afford college and, when he graduated in 1948, saw an opportunity tacked to the bulletin board for a clerical position in Washington D.C. at the office of Immigration and Naturalization Service.
In 1951, George left the Immigration office to work for York Corrugation Company in D.C., starting as a clerical typist and rising to assistant branch manager by 1958. He then left to work for Metal Distributing Co., entering as office manager and, in four short years, leaving as Vice President. These last two positions laid the foundation for him, along with three other persons, to found and operate a heating and air conditioning wholesale company, Old Dominion Steel Supply, Inc. in 1962. Under his guidance as President, the company grew, opened additional branches and flourished over the years, until, at age 63, he retired, a true self-made business man.
George met the love of his life, Betty Long, in high school. They became engaged when Betty was a junior in high school and married in 1949. They were the quintessential example of childhood sweethearts that went on deeply loving each other through every phase of their lives. They loved to travel, exploring the world from Europe to Japan. They raised three children, took them on many travels across the US and treated each of them to a trip abroad. They provided a strong example of what committed love was, embracing the scriptural verse “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” For George and Betty, that love was endless.
George was deeply committed to God. He had a deep faith and lived by example. He gave of himself generously through charitable gifts to their church and Christian organizations throughout the world and through his own involvement in church and Christian ministries. He was a long time member of Grace Lutheran Church as well as Cornerstone Assembly of God in Bowie, MD.
George’s passion was hunting small and large wild game across North America. He went on large game hunting expeditions (bear, caribou, elk, antelope and moose) across Idaho, Colorado, Ontario and Newfoundland, as well as smaller game in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Florida. In 1967, he decided that he wanted a place of his own to hunt and found his “second home” in an old farm house that was built on 131 acres near Bedford, PA. Bedford became George’s refuge, and he invited many others to enjoy this refuge, from Boy Scout troops earning their badges, to fellow Christians for mountain retreats, to family gatherings. He called it his “Stop the world I want to get off” place.
George will be sorely missed by his children and all who have had the privilege to call him “friend.” His integrity as a person, love and devotion to his wife, family and God became a beacon for what it means to truly live and live well.
The funeral will be held at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 Crain Highway, Bowie, MD on Monday, December 13.
