George C. Safford, Jr., age 77, of Gambrills, MD, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

George was born on April 25, 1946 to the late George C. and Florence (nee Thaete) Safford in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

In 1964, George graduated Marple Newtown High School. He then served in the US Army as a heavy equipment mechanic stationed in Alaska. After discharge, he relocated to Maryland to attend the University of Maryland, College Park campus, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Finance.  After college, George followed in his father’s footsteps starting a career in the construction industry, followed by a career in construction sales.

In 1976, George met his future wife Mary Ruth “Ruthie” (nee Wright).  They married four years later on October 4, 1980 and enjoyed a 42-year life journey together. The couple was not blessed with children, but shared their love with many “fur babies”:  cats - Misa, Witchie, Muffin, and Sammie; and two Shetland Sheepdogs - Gus and Alex.

George was a kind and gentle man, with a keen sense of humor, who enjoyed spending time and sharing stories with his family and many friends.  He enjoyed a love of sports cars, history, current events, reading and loved having projects to work on. 

George was predeceased by his sister, Barbara “Lynn” Huff, in 2018.  He is survived by his wife Ruthie, brother-in-law Robert “Bob” Huff, nephew Christopher “Chris” Huff (Stacey), niece Elizabeth “Libby” Crawley, great nephew Charles “Charley” Huff, great nieces Leah Huff and Sara Crawley, life-long friend Charles “Ched” Bradley (Jenny), and many loving extended family members and friends. 

Visitation and services will be held at Beall Funeral Home (www.beallfuneral.com), 6512 NW Crain Highway (Rt. 3 South), Bowie, MD 20715, on Thursday, May 18, 2023, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.  (There will be a live-stream of the service for those who cannot attend. Please see website above.) In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s name can be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (www.pcf.org).
