Georgia Beth Pratt - Wife to Lawrence, Mother to Melissa and Andrew, Grandmother (Bompie) to Bodhi, Mother-in-law to Caitlin, Mejor Amiga de Lorraine, and Dog Mom to Annabelle - passed away peacefully in her own home on July 24th, 2024, surrounded by her family and cherished friends. To truly understand all that was Beth, would be best experienced through her voracious appetite for life and unwithering desire to improve the lives of others around her. A woman with unbridled energy, this was true until her body could no longer physically keep up with her gusto. For the record, she would've wanted me to tell you now that it's none of your business how old she was.
Beth was born in St. Louis, Missouri, as the eldest daughter to William and Georgia Brown and older sister to Susan. Much like the tornados in the area, Beth spent her youth twisting through the greater midwest, as a result of her father's profession, before settling in her official hometown of Greenwich, Connecticut. She was more than happy to share her fondness of Greenwich and, if you knew her, you knew she would share that New England spark of an attitude regularly. After attending Greenwich High School and her beloved UConn, Beth earned her Master's degree at the University of Maryland, where she unlocked her life's true passion: teaching.
Beth taught throughout the Maryland area, having spent time at schools in Annapolis, Lothian, Crownsville, Annapolis (again) and Arnold across her career. Beth loved teaching so much that she decided to pursue extra teaching opportunities via coaching swimming, teaching CPR, lifesaving, and first aid. Beth met her husband, Larry, at the Red Cross where they both worked. Details are sketchy, but Larry may or may not have been Beth's supervisor, but who can keep track of such things? Regardless, this formed the bond of a loving marriage that went on for forty-two years. Beth was the guiding light and the love of Larry's life and vice versa. These two enjoyed one another thoroughly through trips, date nights, concerts, dinner dates, and eventually building a family together. Perhaps, the thing that Beth was best at was being a loving Wife and nurturing Mother.
Perpetually young at heart, Beth believed that age was just a number and lived accordingly. An eternally joyful and funny woman, she loved designer shopping, eating at new restaurants, and celebrating every single holiday. A woman of a million hobbies, Beth adored dancing, swimming, music, traveling, the arts, reading, wine, dogs, family, friends, movies, sports, Law & Order, and quality time. She loved the beach and the ocean, as demonstrated by her adoration of all things nautical. She was an expert folk painter, antique enthusiast, and furniture refinisher. Beth was masterful baking in her kitchen, excavating in her garden, crafting in her sewing room, and directing Larry anywhere that he needed to be managed, which may have been her favorite hobby of all.
A firecracker until the end, Beth selflessly sought to teach until she had nothing left to give. As she readied her departure, she taught us how to handle grief, dignity, mortality, and remembrance all while remaining spunky and funny; a true educator through and through. Georgia Beth Pratt will be eternally missed, honored, and remembered - especially when The Rolling Stones are playing or a lovely glass of wine is begging to be enjoyed.
If you're reading this, my hope is that you'll leave a kind memory that you hold of Beth in the guestbook below. She would have really enjoyed reading them, even if she wouldn't necessarily have admitted it. There will be a small, family-oriented Celebration of Life sometime in the near future. Thank you for taking the time to remember an amazing woman, daughter, wife, mother, sister, best friend, and teacher... among a million, trillion other things.
I love you, Mom. See you in the stars.
