Gerry was born on January 9, 1941 in Washington, DC. He was a 1959 graduate of Gonzaga High School in the District and graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park with an undergraduate degree in Government in 1963. Following graduation, Gerry worked in the Clerk’s Office of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia while attending the American University Washington College of Law at night. Following his graduation from law school in 1967, he practiced law while teaching at Prince George’s Community College and Northern Virginia Community College. In 2003, Gerry contracted the West Nile Virus and was hospitalized for six months and was expected to never regain the use of his arms or legs. Although he did not have a full recovery, he was able to walk and drive after several months of physical therapy. He spent the next fifteen years enjoying his family, doting on his grandchildren, helping his friends and neighbors, and paying forward the kindness he received while recovering from his illness.
Gerry was a lifelong Catholic who attended Mass regularly and especially enjoyed going to Stations of the Cross services during Lent. A memorial gathering is scheduled for Wednesday, September 26, 2018 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Highway, Bowie, Maryland 20715. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 12:00pm at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Avenue, Millersville, Maryland 21108.
In lieu of flowers, Gerry wished that donations in his name be directed to the Disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ (https://www.dljc.org/), the Catholic religious order to which his oldest grandchild (Sister Marie Fidelis Sledgeski) is a member.
