Gerard “Jerry” Edward Murchie
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Gerard E. Murchie at his home on March 18, 2025. Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1938, Jerry grew up a Brooklyn Dodgers’ fan and went to games at Ebbets Field. He graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School where he was a member of the track team and later received his bachelor’s in business administration from St. John’s University. He parlayed his degree into a long and successful career at the IRS, retiring in 1993 after 34 years of dedicated service.
Jerry was a loving father to six children (Kevin, Karen, Scott, Susan, and Michele, with his wife of 20 years, Eileen, who remained a lifelong friend) and Andrew (with his devoted wife of 42 years, Liz)—and a beloved grandfather of Lauren, Justin, Hunter, Brynn, Blythe, and Tristan. His barbecued Thanksgiving turkeys (aka flaming birds), homemade apple pies, funny puns, and heartfelt poems were legendary.
Jerry was an involved member of his community (coaching his kids’ baseball/softball and basketball teams, gamely joining Andrew’s Boy Scout troop on campouts) and of his church (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton). He lived his faith daily.
He loved to travel, especially to Disney, where he was like a kid in a candy shop and would have to be pulled along to get out of the park before it closed. Later in life, he enjoyed going to spring training games in Florida (with side trips to Disney, of course!).
Jerry was active in a 12-step program for 40 years, sharing his story with countless others who he helped—and was helped by—along the way. He never met a stranger and was loved by all he met. He will be sorely missed.
Jerry is survived by his wife Liz Murchie and their son, Andrew; by Eileen Murchie and their children Kevin (and wife Holly), Karen, Scott, Susan, and Michele; and by his grandchildren Lauren, Justin, Hunter, Brynn, Blythe, and Tristan.
