Gilbert High Jones “Honey”, beloved husband of Mildred and father to Vicky, Tony, Michael, and Marvin, died on May 11, 2022, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
Gilbert was born on October 15, 1940, in Newport News, Virginia. He was educated in the public school system of Virginia and joined the Military in 1958. After serving for 26 years as an administrative photojournalist and communication specialist, including several assignments and multiple deployments to Asia, Europe, and Vietnam, he retired from the Army in 1984. Jones (as he was known) settled in Washington, D.C. and then Silver Spring, MD. In 2017 he returned to the military installation, Fort George G. Meade. He worked for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD for 35 years before retiring in 2020. He was a mentor who was admired and highly respected by fellow persons in his trade.
He is survived by his partner and wife of 36 years, Mildred; his daughter Victoria Brown (Joseph-deceased) of Hampton, Va.; his son Gilbert Anthony (Denise) of Valley Stream, NY, stepsons; Michael Carter (Rhonda) of Lanham, MD and Marvin Carter of Rockville, MD; brother Rev. Dr. Walter Howard Jones (Diane) of Newport News, Va.; 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy Jones, Sr. and Elmer Williams and brother Leroy Jones, Jr.
There will never be enough words to describe Gilbert, but to have him in your life as family, friend, or coworker was an honor. We will hold him in our hearts always and forever and there will never be anyone quite like “Honey”.
Gilbert will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery (date pending) with full military honors.
