Gladys Boluda of Davidsonville, Maryland passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 25, 2019 Annapolis, Maryland. Gladys was born in 1959 in Havana, Cuba, immigrated to the United States when she was two, and served more than 39 years in the U.S. State Department – most recently as the Assistant Chief of Protocol.
Gladys was a proud Cuban-American, and the only thing of which she was more proud was her family. Gladys was the loving mother of Alexandra Boluda Curry, wife of Michael Robert Curry, and sister of Delia Robey (Andy), Miguel Boluda (Beverly) and José Boluda (Lee Ann). She is survived by her mother, Gladys Perez Boluda. Her father, Miguel Boluda Sr., passed away in 2011. Gladys was the proud aunt of Jessica Bratten (Andy), Amy Boluda, Christine Boluda Thackston (Brian), Sarah Boluda, Alaina Robey, Miguel Boluda, Megan Robey, Emily Boluda, and Andrew Robey; and great-aunt to Sophie Bratten.
Gladys began working for the State Department on the Soviet Desk in 1980. Her responsibilities grew over time where she became the Deputy Office Director. Later, as Assistant Chief of Protocol for Diplomatic Affairs, Gladys was responsible for greeting heads of government and other foreign dignitaries when they arrived in the United States as well as helping ambassadors from other countries present their credentials to the President of the United States. Gladys served as acting Chief of Protocol during the transition between the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations.
