Gwen passed peacefully after a long period of illness on July 20, 2022. She was born on February 2, 1934 in Oakfield, Georgia to the proud parents of L.C. and Willie Glover. She had the joy of being the oldest sister of three younger sisters. Gwen was preceded in death by her sisters Princess G. Powell and Mary Royster. She is survived by her younger sister, Sherry Gayle Panker (John) and many nephews, niece, and cousins. Gwen joined the church at an early age and worshiped at Clifton Park Baptist Church until her illness.
She grew up during the time of segregation when education for higher learning was limited. Her mother, a dedicated teacher for over 40 years, instilled education in all of her daughters and worked hard to send them to boarding school. This was an extraordinary expense for a single parent after the loss of her husband. Gwen graduated from Boarding School at Gillespie Seldon Institute in Cordele, Georgia. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in Library Science with a minor in French from Clark University in Atlanta, Georgia. She continued studies toward a Master’s Degree at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Gwen always sought perfection in everything that she did. She loved reading and listening to classical music, and Spanish, although she didn’t speak Spanish. She could hold her own in a French conversation. She played the piano for her students as well as keeping the family entertained by playing Christmas Carols and tributes for birthday celebrations.
She was an educator at heart. A strict disciplinarian, creative and dedicated to the students. Gwen participated in the Embassy Adoption Program sponsored by the D.C. Public Schools and the Women’s Committee – Washington Performing Arts. She dedicated time in exposing students to different ethnic cultures. They dined at French restaurants as well as attended the diplomatic tea at the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia. She was awarded honors for her outstanding service with the program. She enjoyed the lifelong service for students from elementary through high school. Gwen soared in creating a comfortable environment for parents and a successful academic program for students.
She drove to the Washington, DC area in her ‘red Corvette’ in 1964. Yes, she was also a fan of Prince. Most of her friends and associates could not imagine her in a red corvette, but she actually owned three corvettes in her lifetime.
We will think of her always; we talk about her still; she will never be forgotten. We will hold her close to our hearts and there she will remain until we meet again.
Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
