Mrs. Hattie Octavia Johnson Lane, daughter of the late Joseph S. Johnson, Sr. and Bessie Lambert Johnson, was born in Stamford, Connecticut on November 20, 1935.  She was the oldest of four siblings. She attended Cloonan Junior High School where she was a member of the girls’ basketball team.   She graduated from Stamford High School and subsequently attended New Rochelle Hospital School of Nursing where she received her nursing degree and became a Registered Nurse. She was the first woman of color to graduate from New Rochelle Hospital School of Nursing.

On June 30, 1956, she married the late William (Bill) Lane, who served in the United States Air Force from 1952 – 1972. This union resulted in four children, Alison, Kenneth, Karen, and Dianna.  Hattie was a very private woman who was proud to be a military wife. She and their children accompanied Bill on his various tours of duty throughout the US and the Philippines until he retired in 1972 to begin a successful career in real estate. They lived in various cities in Maryland for over 25 years including Clinton, Fort Washington, Seabrook, and Glenn Dale.

Hattie had a 40-year successful career as a registered nurse, having worked as a floor nurse, emergency room nurse, and charge nurse at hospitals and clinics on the various Air Force Bases and within the community.  After several years of being an advice nurse at Kaiser Permanente, she retired from the nursing profession.

After retiring from Kaiser, Hattie and Bill relocated to Locust Grove, Va. to begin their retirement life. They frequently went on road trips to the New England states to enjoy the beautiful scenery and Maine lobster.  In 2002, her husband of 46 years passed away and Hattie relocated back to Maryland to be closer to her adult children.  She lived in Odenton and subsequently Bowie, where she departed this life.  Hattie enjoyed the outdoors, family gatherings, game shows, and solving crossword puzzles.  She would compete against herself to see how many puzzles she could solve before having to cheat and look at the answers in the back of the puzzle book.

She is survived by her brother, Joseph Johnson, Jr. (Naomi), her sister, Rosalene Krygar (Paul – deceased), 3 daughters - Alison Himes (Stuart), Karen Bell (Norman – deceased), Dianna Smith (Reginald), six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
