Hazel Shreve Merchant passed away peacefully on May 5th, 2024, at the age of 95. Born to William and Naomi Shreve on July 11th, 1928, Hazel grew up in Washington, DC, alongside her brother Billy.
In 1947, Hazel wedded her beloved husband, Philip Merchant, and together they embarked on a remarkable journey of love, family, and adventure. The couple developed a profound passion for travel inspired by Philip's Naval career which took them to diverse corners of the globe including Cuba, Guam, Hawaii, Virginia, Illinois, and Maryland, raising their two children, Lynn and Steven along the way.
Following Philip's retirement, Hazel and Philip settled in Florida, residing in Clearwater then Ocala. The couple continued their adventurous life by traveling to their favorite countries such as Germany, England and France. The couple enjoyed their relaxing days in retirement until Philip’s passing in 2009.
In 2014, Hazel relocated to Maryland to be closer to family. She was a charter member of Brightview Severna Park, where she created lasting friendships. Hazel's presence illuminated the lives of those around her, and she will be deeply missed by her friends and the dedicated employees of Brightview Severna Park.
Hazel had a fulfilling life that extended beyond her travels. She enjoyed dining with her friends at Brightview, having friends and family over for brunch or to dine in the bistro, and playing bridge.
She is survived by and missed dearly by her daughter, Lynn Hale, her son Steven Merchant, grandchildren Kelly Hale, Brad Merchant (Kasey), Meredith Robeck (Sebastian), and Courtney Rivera (Joey), as well as her cherished great-grandson, Otto.
A service to celebrate Hazel's life will be held at the Crownsville Veterans Cemetery on Friday, June 7th, at 1:45 pm. Following the service, refreshments will be served at the home of Steven Merchant in Crofton, Maryland.
