Helen Paraskevopoulos, (nee Antonopoulos) age 90, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 18th, after brief complications from congestive heart failure. Helen was born on May 11, 1934, in the town of Kymi on the island of Evia in Greece. Along with her family she immigrated to the United States in 1948 and settled in New Jersey, where she enjoyed the life of a quintessential American teenager: going to church dances, vacationing at the Jersey shore, and working summers in her uncle’s candy shop on the boardwalk in Asbury Park. She graduated with her BA from Fairleigh Dickenson University with a teaching degree. She went on to teach 2nd – 5th grade for 41 years in Plainfield NJ, 39 of them at the same elementary school. She married her husband, George, in 1959. Helen and George were fortunate to spend most summers traveling to Greece and later other countries. She spent most of her years in New Jersey but moved to Maryland in 2020 to be closer to her family.
She is survived by her son Nicholas, daughter-in-law Lisa and her grandchildren Eleni and Anastasia. Helen was a beloved mother, grandmother, godmother, aunt, cousin, and friend, known for her kindness, sense of humor, and love for her family. Her family was the center of her world, and she took immense pride in the lives and accomplishments of those around - especially her grandchildren Eleni and Anastasia.
Helen will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. May her memory be eternal.
