It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Hercules Octavianus Pitts, Sr. on February 8, 2022 at the age of 75. He was born on November 10, 1946 in Charleston, South Carolina to Henry Thomas Pitts and Olivia Brown Pitts. Hercules spent his formative years in Bermuda and Portsmouth, Virginia, before entering the United States Navy. Hercules served as an Aviation Fire Control Technician while in the Navy.
Hercules met Rhonda Gray in Boston, Massachusetts. Both were alumni of Northeastern University. They relocated to Prince George’s County, Maryland in 1978 where Hercules was employed as a Technical Manager with AT&T and Rhonda began her career as a schoolteacher. They married in August of 1987 and were blessed with three children: Hercules Jr., Brittany, and Maya.
Hercules had a vision for a life beyond the 9 to 5 grind. He became the owner of four apartment buildings, which he named after his family members. His success as a property owner led him to chase his next dream of becoming the owner of two prestigious golf clubs. That dream came to fruition when he became the owner of Lake Arbor Golf Club and Marlboro Golf Club in Prince George’s County. He hoped to have his family join him in one of his businesses and to take them to new heights. Hercules had the distinction of being the first African-American to own two golf courses in the United States. He founded the Lake Arbor Golf Academy and Teaching Center and encouraged youth through “Hook a Kid on Golf”.
Hercules was always the consummate jokester. He relished in antagonizing young and old through physical as well as mental sparring. One thing that stood out about him was his love of family. The most recent was assisting his brother, Eddie, in the building of a barn on his property in Skippers, Virginia. He kept up with each of his grandchildren: Hercules III, Adonis, Kayla, Tyler, Jordyn and Journee. But the most recent focus was on his newest grandchild, Journee who affectionately called him “Bah-bah.”
Hercules was an avid Redskin fan and was excited when he was asked to attend one of their final games at Redskin Stadium in January. He also had a love for the game of golf and could be found playing or hitting golf balls in his spare time. Hercules loved to travel and was eager to join in on any planned trips with Rhonda and the family. He enjoyed the warm weather so the Caribbean and Mexico were among his favorite trips.
Hercules leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Rhonda Pitts, his son Hercules Pitts Jr. (Kendra), daughters Brittany Fraley (Bryan) and Maya Pitts, two sisters, Sandra Brown and Stefanie Pitts of Portsmouth, VA, five brothers, Henry Thomas Jr (deceased), Theodore of Durham, NC, Joseph (Cathy) of Alamogordo, NM, Paul (Christiane) of Portsmouth, VA and Edward (Candace) of Skippers, VA, 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 6 aunts, 2 uncles and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
