Remembering … Herman Theodore Booker With Love
…But we remember now with love, your life from start to end and the dash between those dates.
We are so glad we knew you, as husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, & friend.
Herman Theodore Booker, beloved husband of Ethel Booker, transitioned peacefully into eternal rest on March 12th, 2021 at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, in Charlotte Hall Maryland. Herman, best known as “Booker” or “Mr. Booker”, was born in Aquebogue, New York on June 28th, 1936 to Russell and Margaret Booker. He was the seventh child of twelve children and the loving brother of Shed Lee, Mary, Annie, Sonny, Frank John, Iantha, Russell, fraternal twins Alice and Grace, Frances, and Steve. Herman was the father of five children, Ernie, Crystal, Raymond, Hazel, and Sharon. He was also the grandfather of three precious grandchildren, Melody, Brian, and Lauren; and the great grandfather of three bundles of joy, Imani, Jada, and John.
As a native of New York, Herman was educated in the New York Public School Education System. At an early age Herman accepted the Lord as his Lord and Savior and was baptized. He attended the Baptist Church in New York with his siblings and parents. He enlisted into the United States Marine Corps in 1954 and was stationed at Paris Island Marine Corps Base in Paris Island, South Carolina. While in the Marines, he was a chef and received awards for his cooking. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Marines in 1962. Herman was deeply passionate, very proud, and loved everything about the Marines until the end of his life. Driving around Bowie, Maryland, you could always recognize Herman Booker by his navy blue Ford F150 truck with the United States flag and the Marine flag waving in the breeze and his Marine stickers on the back bumper.
While stationed at Paris Island in South Carolina, Herman met the love of his life, Ethel Mack. Soon after, he asked her to marry him, and they entered into the Bonds of Matrimony in 1958 in Beaufort South Carolina. In 1966, Herman and Ethel Booker relocated to East Orange, New Jersey where he worked various job to support his family. Herman was employed as a Sixteen-Wheeler Tractor Trailer driver for several years and later became an owner-operator serving various companies before shifting to the United States Postal Service (USPS). At USPS, he worked as a USPS tractor trailer driver until he retired in 1991. Driving tractor trailers became Herman’s new passion. His passion grew to a point where he even started participating in many driving rodeo competitions. He was such an excellent rodeo driver that he became one of the champions and brought home many 1st and 2nd place trophies.
After his retirement from the USPS, Herman and his family, relocated to Bowie, Maryland. Shortly after relocating to Maryland, Herman gained employment with the Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) as a PGCPS bus driver. Herman enjoyed everything about being a bus driver. He was very conscientious and attentive to his students. Being a PGCPS bus driver also allowed him to be present with his grandchildren which he immensely appreciated. He retired from the Prince George’s County Public Schools in 2003.
Herman had many joyous hobbies where he could just sit back and relax. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, watching his favorite football team which, at the time, was called “the Washington Redskins” and even loved playing cards and playing pool while smoking a cigar with his buddies. He was a caring, hard working person who never left a job unfinished. He was always there when and if you needed him. He enjoyed making people laugh and just lived life to the fullest no matter what. Even after his health began to decline and he was admitted into the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, his love of people and his joy of making them laugh continued. He loved to socialize with the staff at the Veterans Home and was a very popular resident all around the entire building until his passing.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Margaret Booker; sons, Ernie and Raymond Booker; and daughter, Sharon Booker. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, five sisters, Mary, Annie, Iantha, and the twins, Alice and Grace Booker; and five brothers, Shed Lee, Sonny, Frank John, Russell, and Steve Booker. Additionally, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Marion Sanders. He will be missed dearly.
Herman leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Ethel Booker of Bowie, Maryland, two daughters, Crystal Booker of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland and Hazel Sanders of Walterboro, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Melody Dotson of Palm Coast, Florida; Brian Booker Daye of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland; and Lauren Daye of Odenton, Maryland; three great grandchildren, Imani, Jada, and John Dotson; and one sister, Francis Booker of Long Island, New York; two sisters-in-law, Cleo White of Beaufort, South Carolina and Sarah Littlejohn of Columbia, South Carolina; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
