James Leland McIntire, Jr.

James Leland McIntire, Jr. of Crofton died on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023. He was 78 years old.

Jim was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on April 4, 1945, the son of the late James Leland and Doris Schmidt.  He graduated from Allegheny College in 1966, where he received a bachelor’s degree in history. He married Gail McCarthy of Pepperell, Massachusetts in 1973. 

After college, Jim entered the U.S. Marine Corps Officer Candidate Program in Quantico, Va. and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps reserves before being augmented into the regular Marine Corps in 1970. After serving in the Vietnam War, he continued his career with the Marine Corps retiring in 1992 as a Colonel.  Some of his personal decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V”, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star.

After leaving the military, Jim worked in private industry for 25 years.  In retirement he enjoyed traveling with family, reading, researching genealogy, cooking, and attending sporting events for his children and grandchildren.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Gail, and their children Gavin, Grady (Melissa), Toby (Kathleen Duffey), and four grandchildren, John, Ethan, Katie, and Grace McIntire.
