James P. Murray

July 8, 1939 — April 4, 2024

Bowie

James (Jim) Murray of Bowie, Maryland died peacefully in his home on Thursday, April 4, 2024 after a six-month battle with leukemia.

He was born on July 8, 1939 in Brooklyn, New York and was the youngest child of Irish immigrants William Murray (Carnacregg, Menlough, County Galway) and Evelyn Murray (nee Crisham of Tigreenaun, Barnaderg, County Galway).  In 1957, after graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School, Jim embarked on a 42 year career with AT&T.  During that time, he played a pivotal role in supporting various U.S. government missions.   His contributions included assistance to the White House and numerous federal agencies, bolstering national security efforts.

Jim loved sports.  He was always a BROOKLYN Dodgers fan – not a LA Dodgers fan.  55 Dodgers was his license plate.  When he was no longer able to play competitively, he became an accredited soccer referee, overseeing games from children’s intramural leagues to college level.   Jim devoted 66 years to being an engaged member of the Knights of Columbus.  He was an active member of Sacred Heart Church, serving on the Parish Council, Finance Committee, Lector, and Labor Day Festival volunteer.  Jim also dedicated his time and skills as a volunteer at the National Capital Radio & Television Museum where he meticulously restored vintage radios and loved doing “Magic” in the Bowie Magic Club and his grandchildren loved it!

Predeceased family members include his parents, sister Catherine (Cay) Hinckley, brothers John and William (Bill), grandson Cormac (Mac) Murray, and great-granddaughter, Payton Nicole Brenner.

Survivors include his high school sweetheart and wife of 62 years, Maureen Murray, sons John, Michael, and Brian (Aimee), six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) Foundation or the Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) Foundation in memory of James Peter Murray.
