James Joseph O'Farrell

February 19, 1935 — September 20, 2021

James Joseph O'Farrell Jr., 86, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2021.

James was born in Jersey City, NJ to the late James and Teresa (Elwood) O'Farrell who came from Ireland. He was married to the late Diane (Sobota) O'Farrell for over 48 years. He was a devoted husband and cared for her during her fight with Alzheimer’s Disease.

He received a BS in Civil Engineering degree from New Jersey Institute of Technology and a Master of Business Administration from Rutgers University.

After a short career as a boxer, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan. During his civil engineering career, he had positions in Puerto Rico, Trinidad, New Jersey, Anne Arundel County, MD and retired after over 20 years at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.

James raised his family in Lyndhurst, NJ and Bowie, MD. The family has fond memories of spending summers in Belmar, NJ.

He is survived by four daughters - MaryAnne Crim and her husband Bill of Hampstead NC, Eileen Mumford and her husband David of Millersville, MD, Rosemary Montgomery of Catlettsburg KY, and Diane Leighton and her husband Dan of Cary, NC; two sisters - Sr. Rita O'Farrell of Newark, NJ and Kathleen DeMonte and her husband Ronald of Colonia, NJ; and was beloved Pop Pop to nine grandchildren - Sean Crim, Thomas Mumford, Allison Crim, Andrew Mumford, Mikayla Montgomery, Will Mumford, Noah Montgomery, Jonathan Leighton and James Leighton.
