It is with great sadness that the family of Jane Losey announce her passing.
Jane Blackwell Losey, age 77, of Owings, MD, passed away on the night of January 1, 2024, after an 8-month battle with stage 4 cancer and subsequent respiratory failure.
Jane was born on October 22, 1946, to William and Magdalene Blackwell in Pomona, CA. After graduating from Pomona High School in 1964, Jane went on to study history at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) where she minored in music.
After graduating from UCSB, Jane obtained her teaching certificate from University of California at Los Angeles, where she also played the oboe and piano with the Los Angeles Orchestra.
In 1969, while teaching at a Monterey Unified School District Elementary School, Jane met Charles Edward Losey who was attending the Defense Language Institute. He and Jane were married in Monterey, California, before moving to Japan and then to the Washington, DC area. They have two daughters, Alison Renee, and Jennifer Nicole Losey.
After Alison’s birth, Jane decided to dedicate more of her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother versus full-time working, while serving as a substitute teacher in local schools. Jane excelled (an angel at times) propping up Ed and her children and supporting them through the many passions and difficulties of their lives. Whether providing support to the family through parental illness and death, or work, sports, schooling, etc., Jane made it her mission to improve the lives of others and find beauty in people and things around her. She was recognized several times for her many years of volunteer work at the White House and Kennedy Center.
Jane was a passionate volunteer, gardener, musician, reader, traveler, swimmer, and patron of the arts. When she wasn’t filling the home with warmth, kindness, and music, she could be found in California visiting family and friends, traveling or spending time in the water. We will miss her greatly.
Jane was predeceased by her father, William McMillan Blackwell and her mother, Magdalene Schaefer Blackwell. Jane is survived by her husband, Ed; 2 daughters, Alison Losey and Jennifer Rose (Lee); and 2 grandsons, Aidan, and Liam Rose.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made in her name to one of the charities Jane was very passionate about, especially St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Cancer Research, and/or Wounded Warrior Project. There will be a celebration of life/memorial at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Hwy (Rt. 301), Bowie, MD 20715 on January 27, 2024, at 4:00 PM. The memorial will be “streamed” from the Beall Web Site.
Janes expressed that her ashes be spread in the Pacific Ocean, and there will be a subsequent memorial service in the greater Los Angeles area in late March.
