Carol Alcorn, 84, of Bowie, Maryland, passed away December 13 in her home. Shut in by Covid since March, she had spoken on the day prior with most of the members of her family with each of whom she had a unique and loving relationship. Carol was born and raised in Washington, DC and lived most of her life in the area, she was very proud to be a native Washingtonian. She met and married the love of her life, Ray Alcorn, and they lived a love story until his death on February 20, 1999. She was active in politics early on and was selected to be a delegate at the Republican convention in San Francisco in 1964. She was a member of the DAR and the Elks Club.
Carol stayed home to raise their family and went back to work full time in the Bowie Library in 1976 and retired from that job in 1996 after winning many friends and establishing herself as a good friend, worker, leader and person.
In recent years Carol was on a constant quest for self-improvement, enrolling in seniors continuing education classes in literature and history on a regular basis. An avid reader, she left behind a collection of hundreds of historical novels, stories, biographies and, of course, romance novels. Carol was a very devout individual whose relationship with God was a constant inspiration for her and she lived a life characterized by service to others and always trying to be an exemplary person.
A lifelong and avid Redskins fan, Carol died the day of their victory in San Francisco and we know she was in heaven looking down when the ‘Skins beat the dreaded Philadelphia Eagles to get into the NFL playoffs. Carol was known for her determination to get home from church in time for kickoff, God help the poor soul who was blocking the church exit if she was running late. If she did have to assert a questionable right of way she would shrug and say “Don’t worry about it, they’re in a state of Grace.” She had a grandson-in-law who was a life-long Cowboys fan, they had a long, active, dynamic and trash talking phone relationship for years, each of them loving it.
Carol is survived by 4 children (Peggy, Kathy, Ray Jr., and John), 6 grandchildren (Ryan, Erin, Kelly, Alex, Zach and Madison), 8 great grandchildren (Leann, Liam, Luke, Nico, Finn, Asher, Ella and Beau), and 2 brothers (Jack and Bill). A private family service for Carol will be held when the pandemic allows with people coming from Australia, Colorado, Texas, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and Florida.
Carol loved all and was loved by all. Her final wish was to be interred with her beloved Ray and desired that her headstone simply read “She Loved Him.” Her children will lovingly ensure that occurs.
