Janice Ann Harris was born August 31, 1944 in Texas, daughter of Victor and Sarah Wehmeyer. Her father died tragically when she was three years old, in the historic Texas City Explosion.

She married David Harris, and together they lived in Texas, Germany, Alaska, and Syracuse during his service with the United States Air Force. They moved to Maryland when her husband took a position with the National Security Agency, and later lived in both Hawaii and Florida before settling back in Maryland.

Janice and David had three children, Mark, who passed away as an infant, Scott, and Stacy. While raising her children, Janice attended college and earned her Bachelor’s degree in nursing. She specialized in labor & delivery, and while working as a Registered Nurse, took great pleasure in caring for thousands of families as they shared the joy of birth.

Jan’s favorite place in the world was the beach. She made sure her family spent time at the beach every summer, even if it meant sharing a one-room motel with all four family members. Her love of the beach was never more evident than during her years in Hawaii in the late 1980s, when she would work nights at the hospital, and spend her days sleeping on the beach.

Janice’s love of children was most evident in the way she cared for and loved her five grandchildren. In her last years, there was nothing she enjoyed and longed for more than visits from the family and lavishing gifts on her grandkids throughout the year. Christmas was her absolute favorite time to show her love of family with an endless supply of crafts, activities, baking, and meals.

She loved sports, staying true to her Texas roots by cheering for the Cowboys, and embracing her life in Maryland, following the Orioles, win or lose, every season.

She developed a close relationship with the congregation of Harundale Presbyterian Church, a place of worship that she found when she moved to Maryland for the first time, and happily rediscovered when she relocated in recent years.

Janice passed away on March 16, 2019, from complications related to influenza. She is survived by her children, Scott Harris, Stacy Grimes, her son-in-law Joseph Grimes and her grandchildren, James, Elizabeth, Mark, Jake, and Claire.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday March 27, 2019, 11:00am, at Harundale Presbyterian Church in Glen Burnie, MD.
