Bowie, MD

John McArthur Freeny, age 82, of Bowie, MD, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 9, 2025.

John was born on March 8, 1943, in Evergreen, Alabama, to Anna L. Freeny. He spent his early years in Evergreen before joining the United States Air Force after graduating from high school. He proudly served his country for ten years. During a leave, he met his future wife, Ruth Mae Williams, in Citrus, Florida—a meeting that would shape the rest of his life.

In 1968, John and Ruth settled in Washington, D.C., where they raised their two children, Lisa and John Jr. John began working with D.C. Transit as a bus driver before transitioning to the city’s rail system. There, he became a train operator and rose through the ranks to the position of supervisor before retiring.

John was a devoted father, a loving husband, and a man known for his strong work ethic, kind spirit, and great sense of humor. He was also a passionate sportsman who loved playing basketball and baseball, and later in life, enjoyed bowling and golfing.

He is survived by his two children, Lisa and John Jr. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth, and his mother, Anna.

A memorial service will be held at a future date at Beall Funeral Home in Bowie, MD. All are welcome to attend and celebrate John’s life.

In place of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alzheimers.org, in honor of John’s memory.
