John P. Jacobus (75), of Bowie, MD suffered a fall and complications leading to his death on August 7, 2023.
John (Grandpa Ace to his grandchildren) was born to Elmer and Margaret Jacobus,on May 10, 1948 in Newark, New Jersey. He went on to graduate from Union High School, study Physics at Newark College of Engineering, and receive two Master’s Degrees (Biophysics & Bio-engineering) from Penn State.
He embarked on a career as a health physicist and radiation health therapist, starting by enlisting in the U.S. Navy in September 1975 and retired as a Lieutenant Commander, Medical Service Corps in May 1994. John served on nuclear submarine tenders and in Navy Hospitals in Maryland, South Carolina and Guam.
From the Navy, John went to NIH (National Institute of Health) to practice and retired from his position as Senior Health Physicist in April 2016. In retirement, he became a consultant and maintained his contributing status in his professional organizations. He was known by his colleagues as a true gentleman, a loyal friend, a great mentor, a brilliant scientist and a wit who truly will be missed, both for his contributions and his personality.
John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patty and their three children Lisa, Paul and Julie, and grandchildren Karter & Winter.
An active person, John loved chess, murder mysteries, gardens and animals, especially his dog Molly. He was a 100 Gallon Blood Donor and he and his wife rescued ferrets for many years.
The wake will be held at Beall’s Funeral Home in Bowie, MD Thursday August 17th from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral Mass with Military Honors will be the next day, Friday August 18 at 10:30 am.
