John George Kylus, age 86 of Bowie, Maryland passed away on January 30, 2021 at
Anne Arundel Medical Center. John was born to Frances Julia Schute Kylus and Raymond
Aloysius Kylus on December 7, 1934 in Cumberland, Maryland. John was a graduate of
Allegany High School, where he was known for his talent on the football field as an
offensive/defensive lineman. He went on to serve in the United States Army and spent two years
in active duty overseas in Germany. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, John earned a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Frostburg State College, and accepted a position
with the Prince George’s County School System as a CORE/English teacher. He also completed
a Master of Science Degree in Educational Administration at George Washington University and
earned his PhD equivalency. On August 17, 1963, John married Louise Comer, his beloved wife
of 57 years, and they ultimately settled in Bowie, Maryland. They raised their two children,
Kristin and Kevin, and were active members of the community. In 1966, John joined the faculty
at Bowie High School, where he was well known for his roles as a teacher, Track Coach, and
Varsity Football Coach. He was part of the original Varsity Football Coaching Staff, and
dedicated fifteen years serving as a mentor to his players and students. John eventually went on
to work for the Prince George’s County Board of Education as the Transportation Supervisor,
where he remained employed until his retirement. Post retirement, he worked for the Vocational
Services Institute and the City of Bowie. John was a member of the Sacred Heart Council
Knights of Columbus, where he served as Grand Knight and was active in Sacred Heart Parish,
the Annapolis Elks Club, and the Annapolis Fleet Club. He enjoyed spending time with friends
and family, and especially appreciated time with his grandchildren. John is survived by his wife,
Helen Louise Kylus of Bowie, his daughter, Kristin Kylus Jacobs and her husband Thomas, his
son, John Kevin Kylus and his wife Kathy, his grandchildren, Christopher, Kaitlyn, and Justin
and step grandchildren, Sam and Claire. Arrangements are being made by Beall Funeral Home in
Bowie, Maryland, and guests will be received from 4-6 pm, on Friday, February 5th with social
distancing measures in place. A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 6th
at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the
