John Oliver Murray, Sr., age 73, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2022, in Rockville, Maryland. He was born on December 12, 1948, in Washington, D.C. The son of the late Francis J. and Mary Elizabeth Murray, he spent his childhood in Washington, DC, with his parents, brother, and sisters, where he attended St. Peter's School and Mackin High School (Archbishop Carroll).
John is a graduate of the University of Maryland and Benjamin Franklin University. In 1967, John met Joy Hunter, his future bride. A whirlwind courtship ensued, and they were married in June 1969. They began their life together in Bladensburg, MD, before moving to Riverdale, MD, and Lanham, MD. John and Joy spent 52 happy years together, traveling with their children to historical landmarks, camping at Outdoor World, annual beach trips to Bethany Beach, DE, Washington, DC Museums, Orioles, and Bowie Baysox games, and various Church and School activities.
John began his accounting career with Charles H. Thompkins Company in 1970. He was an accountant for over 40 years and retired from World Resources Institute (WRI) in 2013. John also provided tax support services for small businesses, friends, and family members.
John had many interests and hobbies. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus (Past Grand Knight, Mother Seton Council) and the Ancient Order of Hibernians (Past Treasurer, Charles Carroll of Carrollton Division 2). A longtime member of St. Matthias Parish, he served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lecturer, Boy Scout Leader/Volunteer (Pack 411/Troop 411), and an active volunteer in the church. He is remembered for his smile, laugh, calm demeanor, and love of the many cats and dogs over the years. He enjoyed gardening and sudoku.
John was a loving and devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, and friend. Loved by many, he will be deeply missed. He is preceded in death by his beloved Daughter Janet Ann and siblings Francis, Mary, Nancy, and Marjorie. John is survived by his wife, Joy; his children: Jennifer Horsley (Virgil), Julie Miller (James), and John Murray, Jr. (Angela); his grandchildren: Michael, Nathan, Gabe, Hannah, Olivia, Evan, and Eric. He also leaves behind two sisters, Anna Patricia and Rose Marie Murray, his best friend Donald Brophy, two brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the Casey's House Hospice center staff for their excellent care of John in his final days.
Friends and family are welcome at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 Crain Highway, Bowie, MD, on Monday, April 11, 2022, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at 11:00 AM, at St. Matthias Apostle Church, Lanham, MD. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton, MD.
