John Anthony Stamato, 90, of Crofton, MD died Sunday, December 16, 2018 at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall, MD after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Born September 9, 1928 in Johnson City, NY, he moved as a child to Long Branch, NJ. He proudly served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After serving in the Air Force, he moved to Maryland in 1955 and worked for the National Security Agency for the next 33 years. Following his government service, he worked for GE and Lockheed Martin before fully retiring in 1984.
John was an active member of the Crofton community, serving as both a coach for several youth sports teams and as a member of the Crofton Athletic Council. When he was not coaching, he could often be found improving his golf swing at the Crofton Country Club where he was a longtime member, or the Bay Hills in Arnold where he also played. Amongst John’s greatest passions was researching his family tree. He spent many hours at the Family History Center in Annapolis and traveled to Corleto Monforte, Italy and Sao Paolo, Brazil meeting many relatives and compiling familial research that traced his ancestry back centuries.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Murphy Stamato, and children, John Carmine Stamato (Lisette) of Severna Park, Kathryn Stamato of Crofton, Joseph Patrick Stamato (Karen) of Frederick, Karen Hendrix (Blain) of Santa Rosa, CA and Douglas Jacobsen (Kristen) of Manchester, MA; and 14 grandchildren: Jacob, Jonathan, Mary, Michael, Anna, Rebecca, Victoria, Molly, John “Jack,” Austin (Katrina), Travis, Emily, Max and Ben.
