Joseph David Hunt, of Crofton, Maryland, passed away on March 10, 2024 after a courageous six-year battle with cancer. He was husband to Patricia J. Hunt; son of John B. Hunt (deceased) and Patricia S. Hunt; father to John, Alexandra, Matthew, and Benjamin Hunt; and brother to Sharon (Jim Mattson) and Timothy Hunt (Jackie). He is survived by many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joe grew up in Chillum, Maryland and attended St. John the Baptist de la Salle for grade school and DeMatha for high school. He attended Catholic University, where he met many lifelong friends, and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland University College and Master of Science degree in Computer Science from The Johns Hopkins University. Joe was a computer systems engineer, a profession he truly loved. He began his career with the Naval Research Lab for 12 years and then worked for numerous start-up companies as a software engineer. He was in his 20th year working for the MITRE Corporation as a Principal Information Systems Engineer where he was recognized often for his good work. His curiosity for knowledge led him to be a life-long learner and a self-proclaimed tech geek.
Above all, Joe was most proud of his role as a father for his four children. He was a constant and devoted supporter of his children’s various extracurricular activities, but also served as a baseball and soccer coach, as well as a Cub Scout leader. His strong work ethic not only shaped his career but also served as a model for his children, whom he passionately encouraged to pursue higher education.
Despite his battle with cancer, Joe's love for tennis never wavered, even allowing him to participate in a national tennis tournament in Florida with his team in 2021. An avid cyclist since childhood, Joe was the first in his neighborhood to ride a unicycle and later became an enthusiastic cyclist. His love for music, movies, and an uncanny ability to remember actors' faces were among his many interests. Additionally, he was a dedicated NPR listener, with ‘Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!’ and ‘The Moth Radio Hour’ ranking among his favorite programs. Friends and family remember Joe for his generosity, thoughtfulness, and the joy he found in sharing useful information and news articles with loved ones.
Joe's tenacity and unwavering will to live were evident to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
