Joseph Mitchell Love departed this life and passed into God’s care on March 22, 2020. He was born to Isaac T. Love and Mae M. Love on April 1, 1930 in Frostburg, Maryland. Joseph graduated from Gettysburg College with degrees in Mathematics and Chemistry. In 1951, Joseph joined the United States Air Force and served as a Military Police Officer and then Office of Special Investigations (OSI) for 20 years. While stationed at Ramey AFB, Joseph met Iris Marrero and married her on April 18, 1954 in the Presbyterian Church of Aquadilla, Puerto Rico. Joseph and Iris moved to their current home in Bowie, Maryland in August 1967. Joseph later retired from the military as a Major, and then worked for the Library of Congress until 1986, retiring as Director of Personnel Security. Upon his retirement from the government, he worked part time at Bowie Golf and Country Club.
Joseph was a dedicated member of Christian Community Presbyterian Church (CCPC), where he served as a Deacon and Usher. He was very involved in the Christmas Giving program, often assisted in the office and with special receptions in the church, and became known in the congregation for his signature coffee. Among other interests, he enjoyed golfing, spending time with friends at the Laurel Race Track, and watching baseball and local college games on television.
Joseph is survived by daughters Linda, Diane and her husband Brian Waak, Karen and her husband Gerald Hanes; sons Joseph S. and wife Robin, Brian and wife Sandra; 8 grandchildren, Ashley, Jenae and Kyle, Mitchell and Stephanie, Rachel, Lindsey, and Brandon; and his brother Isaac and wife Marilyn. Joseph was predeceased by his wife Iris and his parents.
A Memorial Service will be held at Christian Community Presbyterian Church, 3120 Belair Dr. Bowie, MD at a later date. Viewing and interment private. Please hold flowers until memorial service.
