June Freda King Nearon was born in New York City to Charles Roy and Ruby Ilene King on May 21, 1928. In 1930 Charles and Ruby sent their three young children to live with relatives in Barbados. In 1934 June and her two older siblings, Charles and May returned to New York City.

The King family moved to112th Street and then to 99th Street. June was an avid learner and academically gifted. At the age of 16 she graduated from Julia Richman High School. Upon graduation, she was employed at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). During her tenure at the NAACP, she worked and became acquainted with Roy Wilkins, Walter White and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

While employed at the NAACP, June enrolled at Hunter College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952. June had expressed an interest in traveling to Bermuda as a young child. On her 21st birthday her parents gave her a cruise trip to Bermuda. June began an adventure she would cherish and never forget. Upon arrival in Bermuda, June met the love of her life, Darrell Maxwell Nearon, Sr.

On June 22, 1952, June and Darrell were married. During their 46-year marriage, two children were born Darrell Maxwell and Linda Ilene. June was a devoted and loving mother. When she returned to college to earn her master’s degree in social work from Fordham University, she was employed full-time as a wife and mother. She always made sure that her husband and children were cared for and loved.

June was employed with the New York City Department of Social Services for 38 years. She began as a case worker and retired as the Administrative Director for Non-Secured Detention facilities in the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens. June was committed to the children in the facilities and ensured their rights were protected. After retirement, she would continue to receive cards and letters from the youth thanking her for her caring and compassion towards them.

June was baptized, confirmed and married in the Episcopal Church. She was a devoted Episcopalian and was a member of the Daughters of the King. June was a member of St. Boniface Church in New York for 50 years. Her commitment to the church could be seen when she volunteered for assignments, serving as a lay reader or participating on the Day Care board. June loved her church and the Lord.

In 2017, June came to Maryland to live with her son and daughter. She had traveled to Maryland and enjoyed the different activities and sights. In 2018, a 90th birthday celebration was held in her honor. Her family and friends came to toast her life.

On December 9, 2024, June was called home to be with the lord. She was preceded in death by her husband Darrell Sr. She is survived by her son Dr. Darrell Nearon, her daughter Linda Bolt, four grandsons, Anthony (Bethany), Christopher (Petagay), Andrew and David (Patrice). Ten great grandchildren, Anthony Michael, Avery, Saivon, Laney Grace, Dillon, Ava, Hunter, Alaya, Avea, Ariella, sister Carole, brothers in law Leon (Valerie) and Philip (LeAnn), many nephews and nieces, cousins, extended family and friends.
