Kent V.C. Winterson of Bowie, MD passed away on January 8, 2019 at the age of 79 from Parkinson's disease while in hospice. Born June 29, 1939 in Linthicum, MD, to George ("Van") and Roberta ("Bobbie") Winterson, he graduated from Brooklyn Park High School in 1957. He joined the Air Force in 1960 where he did basic training at Lackland Airforce Base in San Antonio, TX and was then stationed at Torrejón Air Force Base in Madrid, Spain where he met Aurea, later marrying in Segovia, Spain. Discharged from the Air Force in 1965, they settled in Annapolis, MD near family, where they raised their children, Mike and Diana, moving to Bowie, MD in 1976.
After working for Honeywell and then Bechtel Corporation as a graphic designer/artist, he took his talents to work for the federal government at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) as well as the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of HHS, until 2012.
Kent, a man of many talents and interests, enjoyed sailing with his children on his 16-foot sailboat "Gaviota" (Spanish for "Seagull"), spent hours working joyfully in his own garden, and was a member, V.P. and President of the Bowie-Crofton Garden Club at one time or another from 1989 to 2011, organizing garden tours and helping to promote the club through his posters and photographs. He was also a musicphile, collecting a large body of orchestral music, sound tracks and big band music, sometimes in more than one arrangement so he could hear the horn in one, for ex., and the violin in the other. He loved to sing and was a member of the Bowie Senior Chorale for a few years before he became ill. His graphic design talents shone at home through everything from creating enhanced photo albums to making his much anticipated Christmas card that was sent out to family and friends.
Known by all to have the gift of gab, he was quick with a pun whenever the opportunity presented itself. He was the kind of guy who could strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone, sharing information, a laugh, a story. So much so that his family would sometimes be waiting in the car for another 15 minutes after they had said their good-byes while he continued an enjoyable conversation. Anyone who knew him would tell you that Kent was a positive and optimist person who deeply loved and supported his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Aurea, daughter Diana Winterson-Russell (son-in law James and grandson Vonn), son Michael (daughter-in-law Marie and grandchildren Will and Anna), and brothers Harlow of Cape St. Claire, MD (sister-in-law Michelle and niece and nephews, Jennifer, Sean, and Tom) and Stew (sister-in-law Donna) of Lake Worth, FL.
