Kevin M. Smee, Sr. passed away, peacefully, on December 9, 2024 at the age of 96, in Gambrills, MD. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan; one of eight children of Irish immigrants, “Dad” was born at home on September 28, 1928. His strong Catholic faith and Irish roots carried him through the Great Depression.
He attended Catholic Central High School and then University of Detroit Mercy and graduated with a Bachelor degree. His mother and father were hearty farming people from County Tipperary, Ireland, and they instilled in Kevin and his siblings the importance of education, hard work, and resilience.
He joined the Air Force reserves in 1953 as a Second Lieutenant. He moved to Washington, DC in the mid-fifties and worked for Fireman’s Fund insurance as a Claims Adjuster where he met his bride-to-be, Dorothy. The first child, Kevin Jr., was born in Washington, DC. After moving to Bowie in 1964 three more sons were born and raised: Brendan, Stephen, and John.
In 1976, he was assigned an active duty position with the Air Force as Lieutenant Colonel; assigned to Warner Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, GA. At Robins he served as the Director of Intelligence for the Air Force Reserves until 1981 when he retired from military service. The family then returned to Bowie, Maryland and he resumed his civilian career as an Insurance Investigator and served as the President of the Northern Virginia Claims Association for a number of years.
Kevin was exceptionally intelligent, a voracious reader, and a walking encyclopedia. He was kind, generous, honorable, and true to his Catholic faith. He loved to golf and tending to his backyard garden. He lavished nothing on himself except for newspapers and books. He did, however, invest heavily into educating his children and grandchildren; carrying on the legacy of his parents who struggled through the most dire times our Nation has ever seen.
Kevin is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his sons Kevin Jr. of Bowie, MD; his son Brendan of Bowie, MD; his son Stephen of Gambrills, MD; his son John of Italy; grandson Kevin III of Leominster, MA; grand-daughter Annie of Winchester, VA, grand-daughter Katherine of Gambrills and grand-daughter Sophia of Gambrills, MD; as well as a great-grandson, Sean of Leominster, MA.
